WSH New Breast Center and IVF Lab Release

HOUSTON, TEXAS January 28, 2015. The long-awaited Breast Center and IVF lab is open at Westside Surgical Hospital. Patients can now receive comprehensive breast and fertility care with the most advanced imaging and reconstructive surgery techniques available. The landmark center offers 3D mammograms, 3D ultrasounds, stereotactic breast biopsies and bone density testing, in addition to the robust reconstructive surgery program.

“Westside Surgical Hospital has always had a special focus on breast health, but with this new center we will be able to care for women from diagnosis through treatment,” shares Dr. Jay Shenaq, plastic and reconstructive surgeon who is the executive director of the Breast Center at Westside Surgical Hospital.

Advanced technology has now made early breast cancer detection a reality. The three-dimensional (3-D) digital mammography allows physicians to detect breast cancer tumors at earlier stages. Radiologist, Dr. Stephen Rose is the director of the breast imaging program. “The breast radiologists at Rose Imaging Specialists have had a large part in developing Tomosynthesis/3D, producing the first large U.S. study on the effects of this technology on the screening population,” says Dr. Rose. Recent publications by the group were included in the American Journal of Roentgenology, Journal of American Medical Association, and Academic Radiology.

The increased accuracy of this technology truly saves lives. “Three-D mammograms have been shown in our clinical research to reduce false positive studies by 37 percent and increase the detection of early tumors by over 50 percent,” states Dr. Rose. Westside’s Breast Center can also direct biopsies with the revolutionary 3D guidance system. “Patients coming to Westside Surgical Hospital and Breast Center will know they are receiving the latest and best technology in breast imaging from one of the country’s largest and most experienced group of breast radiologists,” he adds.

Westside Surgical Hospital has also opened an IVF lab which offers patients pre-implantation genetic diagnosis as well as fertility preservation – the first of its kind to offer hospital-based IVF technology to all reproductive endocrinologists in the greater Houston area. Cancer patients now have more options when considering their reproductive plans after treatment.

“Westside Surgical Hospital is known for offering exceptional services for women,” says Dr. Michael Heard, the reproductive endocrinologist spearheading the fertility program. “The new IVF services will certainly match that, with a state-of-the-art lab and a commitment to patient service. It’s something our city needs and deserves,” says Dr. Heard.

The comprehensive care breast center opened its doors the first week of January with a convenient location and an atmosphere designed to promote wellness. In addition to these specialized women’s services, the center houses an international program in order to facilitate the care of patients coming from abroad.

“The team we have assembled here is second to none. It includes radiologists and surgeons with years of specialized training in breast health and nurses who understand the unique issues women are facing during this time,” says Dr. Shenaq. “We look forward to taking excellent care of women from Houston and beyond.”
