Breast Reconstruction Awareness Day, or BRA Day, occurs annually in October and is an initiative designed to promote education, awareness and access to care for women needing post-mastectomy breast reconstruction. This was our third annual BRA Day at Dillard’s raising the awareness of reconstructive surgery options for all survivors. Thank you to all for your support at this year’s 26th Annual Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure in downtown Houston. Westside Surgical Hospital & Breast Center was proud to support the 2nd Annual Ulinzi Walk benefiting the Breast Cancer Initiative of East Africa on June 18, 2016. It was a beautiful morning full of hope, inspiration, warm embraces and a few tears. The 2nd Annual Ulinzi 5K Walk/Run was held at Eldridge Park in Sugarland.  The mission of BCIEA comes from the Swahili word “ulinzi”, which means “to protect, guard, watch over, save.” The Ulinzi Walk begun after Philippa Decuir, Founder and Director noticed a growing need for public breast health information, particularly for the people of East Africa. On Friday, June 10 Westside Surgical Hospital and Breast Center and the corporate office K+S Consulting hosted the 2016 Bleed for Houston – Blood Drive. The event was a great success, because of the donations and the help of the other volunteers, we were able to collect 34 pints of blood. Of course, the real winners are the patients in need of blood. For the second year in a row, Westside Surgical Hospital and Breast Center was proud to support the Sisters Network Inc. in the 7th Annual Stop the Silence Breast Cancer Walk/Run. A portion of the funds raised from this event will provide assistance to breast cancer survivors, currently in treatment and facing financial challenges. This year’s race took place on Saturday, April 16 at Discovery Green Conservancy. Westside Surgical Hospital and Breast Center held its first Between the Girls Education and Wellness event on May 11, 2016. This event was created by Jamesia McDonald, Certified Breast Nurse Navigator to bring the women of Greater Houston together for education on mammograms, breast cancer, support and financial options. A mix and mingle was hosted by Sacha Simmons of The Serenity Healing Center. SHC provides oncology massage as well as nutritional education and services to those impacted by cancer whether they are currently in treatment or thriving in survivorship. On May 13, 2016, Westside Surgical Hospital and Breast Center hosted their first ever International Festival – Passport to Health. The festival was a celebration and showcase for the diversity of talents from across the world uniting to promote healthy habits. The back patio of Westside Surgical Hospital and Breast Center was filled with an eclectic and colorful array of artwork, culture and dance. Stop the Silence – National African American Breast Cancer Walk Westside Surgical Hospital and Breast Center was pleased to join members of the Sister’s Network for their 6th annual “Stop the Silence” walk, to raise awareness for breast cancer and encourage early detection among the African American community. The hospital’s team was happy to participate in the 5K walk at Discovery Green, while other team members shared information about the WSH Breast Center with the many who stopped by to visit. Westside Surgical Hospital is pleased to announce that construction has begun on the eagerly awaited breast center at the hospital. This landmark center will offer patients access to stereotactic breast biopsies, a 3D mammogram unit (breast tomosynthesis), 3D ultrasound, and bone density testing. This advanced imaging, combined with the hospital’s robust reconstructive surgery program sets the hospital apart and offers the ideal environment for early detection and treatment.
