Westside Surgical Hospital and Breast Center held its first Between the Girls Education and Wellness event on May 11, 2016. This event was created by Jamesia McDonald, Certified Breast Nurse Navigator to bring the women of Greater Houston together for education on mammograms, breast cancer, support and financial options.

A mix and mingle was hosted by Sacha Simmons of The Serenity Healing Center. SHC provides oncology massage as well as nutritional education and services to those impacted by cancer whether they are currently in treatment or thriving in survivorship.

Arlene Ricardo, M.D., F.A.C.S., gave a presentation on “Breast Health: Sorting through the Facts & Myths”.  Dr, Ricardo educated women on the risk, facts and myths of breast cancer. Some myths, such as wearing deodorant, tight fitting bras and drinking caffeine will increase your chances of breast cancer were busted. Dr Ricardo also dispelled the myth that most breast cancers are hereditary; only 5-10% are hereditary.

Jennie M. Bennett, PhD also gave a presentation on financial options titled “Help is on the Way”.  Dr. Bennett is the founder of Reconstruction of a Survivor, a non-profit that sponsors many services for women who are diagnosed with breast cancer and survivors alike. Individuals who participate in ROAS support groups experience hope and discover a new belief which translates to healing and a better future.
